The first step to building an effective earthquake safety and preparedness plan is having an earthquake kit and earthquake supplies for your home and car. Prepare an Earthquake
Emergency Plan for your Home
- Choose a safe place in every room of your house for protection from an earthquake. It's dangerous to try and move too far during the aggressive shaking of an earthquake. Good earthquake protection places include a sturdy table or desk, a doorway (be careful of the door slamming your fingers!). If nothing else, try to get up against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you.
- Practice DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON at least twice a year! Drop under a sturdy desk or table, hold on, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. Teach children - during an earthquake DROP, COVER and HOLD ON!
- Choose an out-of-town family contact. The ability to use a telephone and contact family or rescue personnel is essential. If you do not have a cellular phone or if it's battery is dead when you need it most, we recommend you fill out the Out of State Contact Cards that are included in BestBePrepared's Earthquake Kits ahead of time. Simply fill out the card with contact information of a friend or family that lives outside your state. If local phone lines are out of service, you may still be able reach friends/family via a payphone or cell phone in order to inform them of your safety conditions (don't forget quarters!!!).
- Eliminate hazards by: bolting bookcases, china cabinets and other tall furniture to wall studs; installing strong latches on cupboards, and strapping the water heater to wall studs.
- Take an American Red Cross First Aid class or disaster training course.
- Train to use a fire extinguisher. Your local fire department can help.
- Inform your caretakers, babysitters, housekeeper and neighbors of your disaster plan.
